Our goal in physical education is for everyone to learn to make healthy choices and to feel successful when participating in a variety of activities. This enables students to develop a positive attitude toward physical activity and to develop healthy habits, which will hopefully continue throughout their lives.
Students will be encouraged to have fun and enjoy physical education. They will also be encouraged to participate to the best of their ability in a wide variety of activities. At the elementary level, certain skills are taught so that students will be able to pursue competitive sports as well as lifetime sports.
Basic introductory skills for the following activities will be taught:
1. Circle, line and relay games
2. Fitness activities, including the state mandated FITNESSGRAM fitness test in fourth
and fifth grades
3. Jumprope
4. Organized games and activities
5. Cooperative games
6. Recreational activities: four-square, knock-out, tetherball
Your child will have physical education three time each week. Your child is required to have a separate pair of gym shoes, which will be kept in your child's homeroom/locker. Each time your child has physical education class, he/she must change into his/her shoes before arriving at the gym. Students may not wear the shoes that he/she wore to school. Shoelaces must be laced snugly and tied on the top of the shoe. If your child does not have the required gym shoes, he/she will walk during class or another appropriate exercise will be assigned.
**If your child has any physical disabilities, please let us know. Problems such as chronic asthma, allergies, heart conditions, diabetes, etc. need to be documented and kept in our files in Mrs. McCleverty's (school nurse) office. Prior knowledge will help us to monitor your child closely and correct or alleviate any problems that arise. The student's safety is important to us as they go through their daily routine.
Students must have a written note (email or voicemail) in order to sit out of physical education class for ONE DAY. Students who are required to sit out of physical education class, for more than one day, must have a written note from his/her physician. Any notes, written by a physician that require a child to sit out of physical education "until further notice," must have a note from his/her doctor, releasing the student back into class.
My conference time varies from day to day. I can be reached at [email protected] or you may call 815/478-3310 ext. 3118 and leave a voicemail. If it is an emergency, please dial "0" and leave a message with Mrs. Jones.
