I will be stepping out of the classroom on Thursday, November 19th and Friday, November 20th. I will be attending the I.A.H.P.E.R.D. State Convention in St. Charles, Illinois. For those of you unfamiliar with that convention, it's the Illinois Association for Health, P.E., Recreation and Dance.
I will be attending sessions such as:
Fitness: Join the movement. Dr. Curt Hinson provided participants with a variety of activities for developing fitness, using individual, partner and small group games and circuits.
Danielson, PERA and SB7: What Does It All Mean for Me? This session explores how teacher evaluation and student performance are connected and their relationship to teacher retention. Many aspects for the Performance Evaluation Reform Act were discussed.
PEDL: An Online Solution for Standards-Based Elem. PE Programs: The Physical Education Digital Library (PEDL) K-5 offers hundreds of lesson plans, activities and assessments developed by Human Kinetics, aligned to the SHAPE American Standards.
The OPEN Curriculum Project: OPEN is a backward-designed online curriculum project designed to ensure equity of access to quality instructional and assessment tools. It is free and available to all teachers with an Internet connection. Each OPEN learning module works toward physical education outcomes through rigorous instruction. The session introduced us to OPEN learning modules, assessments, and teacher evaluation resources through meaningful movements and motivating discussions.
Team Building for the Young and Not So Young 2: This session focused on team building activities for all ages and how to adapt the games for various ages and skill levels. They also showed how to use team building in different sport units.
Common Core Continues!: This session focused on incorporating physical activity, math and language arts into P.E. These are fun activities that the students and administration will love! And me too!!
Integrating Literacy to Maximize Movement: Time in physical education is VALUABLE (we only have 30 minutes/3 day each week). This session included ways to integrate literacy in p.e. classes without losing movement time. In fact, these strategies can help me improve instruction, accommodate learners with a variety of skill levels and limit management issues--all of which will help preserve and perhaps increase the amout of time students are able to engage in learning activites.
Activiate2educate: Sound Minds, Fit Bodies: Making the Connection:
This session showcased all-inclusive activities that educators can incorporate into their teaching with ease. This presentation allowed educators to provide their students with an education like no other--maintaining movement, fitness and fun all while teaching important concepts such as body systems and nutrition. Educators will be seamlessly incorporating cross-curricular concepts like literacy and math in SAME activities without giving up our PRECIOUS Physical Education time!
I cannot wait to get back to my classes so that I can begin to incorporate these new ideas, games and activities into my classes!!
