The fourth and fifth grade students are kicking off football season with an activity called Punt-Return-Tag. On day number one, students watched a video that focused on the fundamentals of punting a football. On day two, students practiced punting a rag football across the length of the gym to the opposing teams back wall. Thus, scoring one point. On day three, students continued punting the ball to their opponents back wall in the hopes of scoring 1 point. If the opposing team catches a punted ball, they may then run the ball across the 50 yard line to their goal line. Which in turn, results in six points scored. If the student carrying the ball is tagged by the opposing team, he/she must drop the ball and return to his/her side of the field.

During our double third grade classes, student have been working hard to earn 10 points with a website called GoNoodle. This is an amazing site that allows students to dance, stretch, zumba, free dance, focus, or completely sweat it out! Each of the double classes have earned 10 points and have transformed their class minion. Now the classes will receive dodge ball this week as a special treat for working so hard. Check it out. www.gonoodle.com. It's FREE and goes great for homework breaks. The students in fourth and fifth grade hit the blacktop this week to learn the rules of tetherball. Tetherball focuses on hand-eye coordination, sportsmanship, following rules/directions and teamwork. Watch the video below for the basic thetherball rules! The third, fourth and fifth grade students at Anna McDonald will begin a Four Square Unit, the week of September 7th. The unit stresses following directions, sportsmanship, and hand-eye coordination. This unit is great in that students have the ability to transfer their knowledge of Four Square to the blacktop at RECESS.
The fourth and fifth grade classes began physical education classes going over classroom expectations and grading procedures. Both of which can be found on this website.
We continued into the week focusing on activities that can also be used out at recess. Our first activity was a basketball shooting game called KNOCK-OUT. Students form a single-file line at the free-throw line, in front of the basketball hoop. The first two students in line have a basketball. The OBJECT of the game is to make a basket BEFORE the player BEHIND you makes their basket. If the player behind you in line, make their basket first, then you are KNOCKED-OUT of the game. This activity works on following directions, sportsmanship, upper body strength and problem-solving skills. 1. Each day in physical education class, STUDENTS CAN receive 5 points for:
*having their gym shoes on and tied *walking into the gym *jogging/stretches 2. STUDENTS CAN have points taken away for: *not wearing gym shoes to class *not following directions *talking when they should be listening *not keeping their hands/feet to themselves *arguing *having a negative attitude *not choosing KIND *not participating (sitting out due to negative behaviors) 3. Extra poinst may be added for: *helping others without being asked *having a positive attitude During our double classes, students have been eagerly working on a Fitness Scavenger Hunt. Each student works with a partner to complete the scavenger hunt. Students are given a worksheet with a segmented star. Each section of the star has an exercise that the students must complete. Once the exercise is completed, one student reports to the stage and colors that segment according to the color guide. This will take us several days to complete. Once the classes are complete, we will post them for everyone to see.
I Can...
Wear my gym shoes to class. Walk into the gym, sit in my squad and wait quietly for the teacher to begin. Keep food and drinks out of the gym. Stop--Drop--Listen when the whistle blows. Keep my hands and feet to myself. Arrive on time. Choose kind. |
